Christmas Charity in the Gilded Age presented by the Mark Twain House In-Person
Revisit the storied Gilded Age with a tour through the Christmas season as Mark Twain's family would have experienced. Join our guide, Erin Bartram from the Mark Twain House & Museum as she shows us how the holidays were celebrated in this prominent family. "As Clara Clemens recalled years later, one of the most important Christmas traditions for the Clemens family was assembling and delivering baskets of food and gifts to poor families in Hartford. This program explores the family’s charitable efforts in historic context: increasing prosperity for some, increasing poverty for many more, and a society torn over what to do about it." With echoes of today's world in mind, this program is one you surely do not want to miss! Come join us and get into the holiday spirit! This program is sponsored by the Agawam Center Library Association.
